Greetings!

Welcome to this week's issue of The Total View.

Unless you just crawled out of a hole, saw your shadow and returned to sleep for 6 more weeks on Ground Hog day (February 2), you haven't heard or read about the world-wide exposure of Janet Jackson's breast during the half-time show at the Super Bowl. The debate over this is a classic conflict between personal values. Wow - when values clash. Read more below.

"You hooked my right away." Nadine Brown, Waterville TG, Inc.

Written in "a Blanchard style of getting information across in an easy, understandable and practical way." John Rose, The Horst Group

When Doctrine Motivators clash, the other person is wrong!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Excerpts from Understanding Business Values and Motivators - - - to be released on March 15, 2004.
"Disgusting, outrageous, crass, and classless " to shrugging off the whole event with "what's the big deal about a women's breast"? The airwaves are filled with the outraged citizen claiming that our society is "going to hell in a hand- basket" to the non-chalant defending the right to freedom of speech and artistic license.
It all boils down to this - beliefs.
Some people use the word "believe" loosely: "I believe it's going to rain." "I believe I'll have another piece of pie." For people with high Doctrine motives, "believe" means, "I'll stake my life on it!" Their lives are based on strong convictions, centered in tradition and customs. They see life from a moral and philosophical viewpoint. They conduct themselves-and if they are truly Doctrine oriented, even their businesses-according to a code of principles and standards.
Another term for those individuals motivated by "Doctrine" value is "traditionalist" - keepers of tradition; keepers of the flame; keepers of the law; keepers of the commandments.
A number of prominent religious leaders fall into this category, such as Billy Graham and Mother Teresa.
Rush Limbaugh is a product of strong Doctrine motivators, but are they his driving force? Those who have this Doctrine attitude believe they have found the way and may even want to convert others. Combined with the Power & Authority value, their message could be "my way or the highway." Or it could be a moral code or a philosophy -the founders of Apple Computers were known as MacEvangelists because they passionately preached Macintosh "philosophy" everywhere they went.
No one can ever fault Rush for not knowing where he stood on nearly any subject-until recently, when he tumbled from his pulpit after he was exposed for abusing prescription drugs. So the question must be asked: are his rantings a result of a passionate Doctrine attitude or a means to attain Power & Authority along with huge Economic returns? Have you figured him out? (Power and Authority and Economic are another two of the six business motivators that drive employee behaviors.)
Ronald Reagan operated from strong Doctrine values in support of Free Enterprise. So did Russian leaders, who passionately believed Communism would deliver a brand new world.
Are you getting the idea now? Doctrine values is not about religious belief; it's about belief in a better way. For some, it's religion; for others, it's a political or economic system, or another kind of computer, or a child-rearing philosophy. Whatever, it is a passionately held and defended belief, sometimes coupled with a willingness to die for it.
Doctrine motivators were at work on both sides of the 9/11 event. On one side, Al-Quada's operatives were willing to destroy life, property and even die for their cause. At the same time, fire-fighters, police, medical personnel- and even some employees working in the Twin Towers- risked their own lives to rescue others in danger. Airplane passengers yelled, "Let's roll!" and brought down their own craft, headed to attack the nation's capital. Young men and women enlisted in the armed services to fight terrorism. Americans' sense of patriotism and desire to "protect" our communities and freedoms were responses to our awakened Doctrine values.
Personal values are what energizes workplace harmony and growth or creates conflict and dampens productivity. Each of us uses our values to positively value and negatively judge others.
"Doctrine" is just one of the six values (described in detail with easy to understand examples in Understanding Business Values and Motivators) that motivates each of us and drives our behavior.
    Fact #82
  • For the first time since tracking began 20 years ago, U.S. women outnumber men in higher paying, white collar managerial and professional occupations. . . Bureau of Labor Statistics data indicates that, as of Nov. 30, women represent 50.6 percent of the 48 million employees in management, professional and related occupations. In 1983, the first year the government began recording gender data for its occupational statistics, women accounted for 40.9 percent of managers and professionals.
    In 1998 McKinsey and Company described a United States workplace phenomenon as the "War for Talent", a result of the shortage of workers to fill skilled jobs. McKinsey conducted a yearlong study of 77 companies and 6,600 managers, who concluded that the most significant business challenge over the next 20 years will be recruiting, retaining, and inspiring talent. In 1999 Ira Wolfe described the "Perfect Labor Storm". In 2004, "The Perfect Labor Storm Fact Book: Why Worker Shortages Won't Go Away" arrives - available March 15, 2004!
