Sandwich Generation Jammed Between Work and Family
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Longer life spans coupled with an increase in dual- earner and single-parent households have left many employees juggling caregiving and professional responsibilities. Demographic shifts have left the heart of America's workforce-the "Baby Boom" generation- caring for their aging parents and their children at the same time. The ability of American employers to help their employees meet their family commitments is essential to their long-term success.
Research projects that, by 2030, 47.5 million Americans will be age 65 or older, with 7.3 million Americans over the age of 75. The large increase in elderly Americans present an ever-growing challenge to workers as they become primarily responsible for providing the eldercare their elderly relatives require.
More research on the "sandwich-generation" couples-couples who had both eldercare and childcare duties - found that both husbands and wives served in caregiver roles. Both husbands and wives have compromised their career goals to achieve better work- family balance.
Thirty-one percent of wives and 17 percent of husbands have reduced the number of hours they had worked. Significantly, 21 percent of wives have also passed on the opportunity to be promoted due to their caregiver responsibilities.
The need to balance caregiving and professional responsibilities has a significant impact on employees' work habits. The study found that U.S. businesses lost between $11.4 billion and $29 billion annually due to lost productivity relating to employee involvement in eldercare. Employees' childcare responsibilities also significantly affect businesses. Working parents miss work on average 3.6 times per year due to a failure in regular child care arrangements.
Employers face a multitude of challenges in managing and growing a productive workforce. Short-sighted employers see the problem as a lack of employees with the right work ethics. The visionary leader recognizes that the future is uncertain at best and although he or she can't solve the problems out of his/her control, he or she is in control to minimize the impact of the Perfect Labor Storm.
Are you prepared? How many employees will voluntarily leave your organization with the next 3 to 5 years?
What will it cost you to retain your best employees and how will you do it?
What will it cost you to replace your best employees and how will you do it?
    Managing by Values(tm) - Aligning People, Culture, Strategy and Process
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Discussing corporate culture might sound somewhat "touchy feely," but companies who do shape their culture tend to enjoy profits between 6 and 12 times greater than their competitors. Few strategies are more important to a company's success than a culture that "walks the talk".

    Transforming a business that is managed by values is never easy...but through the pioneering work of Dr. Michael O'Connor and his Managing by Values(tm) process, a successful roadmap for committed leaders is available for leaders of all organizations.

    Ira S. Wolfe, founder of Success Performance Solutions, recently was certified by Dr. O'Connor to facilitate the Managing by Values(tm) process. Many of you might be familiar with Dr. O'Connor. He is the co- author of The Platinum Rule and is founder of the Center for Managing by Values. He also co-authored with Ken Blanchard a book titled "Managing by Values".

    Ira is one of only a dozen international consultants certified by Dr. O'Connor to deliver this program to clients.

    - but when they lead to interpersonal conflicts performance and productivity suffer.

    For instance. You know the answer to a question before your partner is even finished with his first sentence. You prefer to cut to the chase and interrupt - until you hear "Would you let me finish?". You didn't mean anything insulting by it. You just thought you would save everyone some time. The problem is that your partner doesn't see it that way. He considers your interruptions as arrogant and not caring what he has to say. The relationship goes down hill and all you tried to do was shave a few minutes off a conservation.

    Every employee approaches Problems, influence and interact with People, handle the Pace, and follow rules and Procedures differently.

    The CriteriaOne P4 DISC report helps individuals and managers understand how a person's unique behavioral approach either energizes him or zaps the energy right out of him as they deal with each of the foru Ps.  CriteriaOne DISC provides helpful insight into an individual's behavioral strengths and areas in need of possible improvement.
