Greetings!
Welcome to this week's
issue of The Total View.
The average American
spends almost 4 minutes searching for lost keys, televison remote
controls, mobile telephones, and other items every time one of the
little suckers sprouts legs and walks off. Four minutes may not
sound like a lot but the minutes add up.

Employee 'Busy'ness Costing Businesses
Billions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If a person misplaces his wallet once every week, he would spend
3.5 hours each year trying to hunt the darn thing down.
In the average small business,
each staff member spends at least 3 to 5 hours per week looking
for information. At an hourly rate of $12 per hour that adds up
to over $2,800 per employee per annum.
Did you know that telephone
tag costs you an average of $936 per employee per year. If you cannot
answer a client's request immediately, the cost is staggering and
frightening! And worst yet, 25% of all clients are lost due to poor
response to requests. If you have 1,000 clients, then you're losing
on average 250 clients a year, at a cost of $25,000 to $50,000!
Even with widespread computer
usage, 70% of all documentation remains paper based. The average
useable life-span of a document is only 30 to 90 days. Often they
are never accessed again after this time.
An average small business
creates 1 x 4-draw cabinet per staff member per year, up to 5 4-draw
cabinets before they get stored offsite after the 5th year.
Office space is at a premium
though - and the more files you have the more space required which
leaves less space for additional staff members to grow your business
and/or higher rent for storage space.
If your filing system
is paper based or stored within a Windows Explorer folder system
then it can be very hard to bring your knowledge base together to
make accurate business decisions. In fact, it takes the average
employee from 30 minutes to 4 hours to find information stored in
paper-based filing systems or Windows folders depending upon what
they are looking for. Even then they will never be 100% sure that
they have found all of the information.
Being organized and managing
time are priority competencies for many jobs today. Some people
have it - some don't. Can you afford the guessing anymore?
Stop
Guessing. Register today for "Hire the Best and Stop Messing with
the Rest" on October 16 at the Lancaster Business Expo.
More on Managing the Generation Mix
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In
the workplace today, grandparents and grandchildren are working
side by side and getting along. The reason? They have something
in common! (Think about it.)
While developing plans to attract and retain
new young talent, consider the facts when marketing, managing and
motivating Gen Y:
Gen Y never heard Howard Cosell call a game on ABC.
Garrison Keillor has always been live on public radio and Lawrence
Welk has always been dead on public television.
There has always been some association between fried eggs and
your brain.
They would never leave their calling card on someone's desk.
They have never been able to find the "return" key.

How much is employee turnover costing
your company?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A conservative estimate of the cost of turnover for hourly employees
is 25 percent of the annual salary. Personally, our experience
places the actual cost closer to 50 and higher when you consider
lost opportunity costs, lost productivity and even theft, absenteeism,
and other counter-productive and disruptive behaviors.
The costs for salaried
employees has ranged from 1.5 times annual salary to upwards of
14 times annual salary.
But high turnover costs
are not isolated to big business. A small business paying an employee
an hourly wage as low as $5.25 per hour incurs the minimum cost
of $3,528.58 (25% x $14,114.10) everytime an employee turns.
Other examples of turnover costs are:
$7.00 per hour = $4,704.70 in turnover costs
$10.00 = $6,721.00
$15.00 = $10, 081.50
$20.00 = $13,442.00
Marching to a Different Bucket
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just published in the September 2003 Business2Business
.
The lights are back
on after the biggest blackout in North American history. The cost
to American businesses has been estimated to be somewhere around
$6 billion. And although the exact cause of the blackout has yet
to be established, the root cause will ultimately point to human
error - the failure of leaders and executives to build and maintain
an electrical grid that is reliable. Government officials and
utility executives simply failed to anticipate - or at least act
on their anticipation - the consequences of increasing demand
without assessing the vulnreability for a complete system collapse.
