Greetings!
Welcome to this week's issue of The Total View.
According to the American Productivity Audit, many
Americans report to work and attempt to
function "through the fog of inattentiveness, irritability
and sadness." This is called presenteeism and the lost
productivity due to presenteeism is, on average, 7.5
times greater than productivity lost to absenteeism.
(The Health Coalition of Tampa, Florida).
Read more in this week's issue about how to
compute the cost of presenteeism in your workplace -
and then our menu of recommended programs and
services to cut presenteeism and improve productivity.
The Total View is written and
published each
Wednesday by Ira S.
Wolfe, founder of Success Performance Solutions.

Ouch! That's An Awful Lot of Money
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Have you ever hear this one?
"All I want to do is pick up my paycheck and get
the heck out of here?"
We have a name for this attitude. It's called
the "ain't-it-awful-how-we're-treated-around-here".
And "ain't-it-awful" damages a lot more than employee
morale.
The general manager of a 100-employee
manufacturing company recently asked me during a
seminar if I had any idea how much employee negativity
might be
costing him. What he discovered was enough to make
any manager sick.
The GM admitted that at least 10 percent of his
workforce was infected by the "ain't-it-awful" attitude.
He agreed that businesses paid wages to
employees expecting to generate a greater return in
productivity than the actual cost paid out.
So we ran our Ain't It Awful calculator to find that
the company was losing $96,000 per year in lost wages
if as few as 10 percent of his workforce were infected
with the "ain't it awful" attitude.
To calculate the cost of the "Ain't-It-Awful"
Attitude in your workforce:
Example:
a. Identify the number of employees "infected" in
your workplace = 10
b. Identify the average hourly wage and benefits
per employee = $13
c. Multiply the number of hours worked per month
by these "infected" employees X average hourly wage
and benefit = $20,000 (est.)
d. Estimate the % of time these infected employees
were non-productive = 40%
e. Multiply the total monthly wages paid
to "infected" employees (c) X the % of time these
infected employees were non-productive (d) to
compute the monthly wages paid out to employees with
little or no return = $8,000.
f. Multiply the monthly lost wages X 12 months to
compute the annual lost wages due to "ain't it awful" in
your workplace = $96,000.
Our research indicates that individuals "infected"
with the bad attitude virus work at no more than 60
percent effectiveness and an "infected" rate of 10
percent is very conservative.
It is obvious that employers who invest $1 in an
employee and accept a return of not more than 60
cents of productivity will not be around very long.
How much is the Ain't-It-Awful Attitude costing
you?
And what are you doing about it?
Job Mis-matches and Job Stress are major causes of "ain't it awful". CriteriaOne DISC P4 Assessments are a first step in curing "Ain't It Awful".
Managing by Values(tm) - Aligning People, Culture, Strategy and Process
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Discussing corporate culture might sound
somewhat "touchy feely," but companies who do shape
their culture tend to enjoy profits between 6 and 12
times
greater than their competitors. Few
strategies are more important to a company's success
than a culture that "walks the talk".
Transforming a business that is managed by values
is never easy...but through the pioneering work of Dr.
Michael
O'Connor and his Managing by Values(tm) process, a
successful roadmap for committed leaders
is available for leaders of all organizations.
Ira S. Wolfe, founder of Success Performance
Solutions, recently was certified by Dr. O'Connor to
facilitate the Managing by Values(tm) process. Many
of you might be familiar with Dr. O'Connor. He is the co-
author of The Platinum Rule and is founder of the
Center for Managing by
Values. He also co-authored with Ken Blanchard a book
titled "Managing by Values".
Ira is one of only a dozen international consultants
certified by Dr. O'Connor to deliver this program to
clients.

Communication Bloopers!

When Fiat invited Spanish women into thier showrooms,
they should have hired a translator. These auto
dealers overlooked that they were inviting these women
to "have a little affair."
When Chevrolet introduced its new model Nova to
the Puerto Rican market, they neglected to realize
that "no-va" in Spanish means "it does not go."
And when the American Diary Association
launched "Got Milk", it sounds like "are you lactating" in
Spanish.
