Mental Golf Profile -

"Fore" Styles To Improve Your Golf Game

Golfer Celebrating

Ever wish you could get

inside the minds of the

world's greatest golfers?

You might wonder, "How do I compare to the 'best' mental golf style?" A few obvious questions might be "What is Annika's style?" or "What is Tiger's style?" How do they approach the game similarly or differently than you.

You might chalk it up to incredible talent and work ethic. Both Annika and Tiger had great mentors in their youth, too - Pia Nilsson for Annika and his father for Tiger. But rather coaching them to have a "best" mental style, they took their natural mental styles and used them to their best advantage.

You too can do the same thing.

Start by knowing that there isn't any one best style. Even more important, don't "pigeon hole" yourself into some imaginary "best" mental golf style. Just look at this list of ten golf greats and you'll quickly recognize any golf mental style can be a champion, if you use your mental style to focus and don't divert all your energies toward trying to be someone you're not.

1. Tiger Woods and Ernie Els are great players but they succeed with two different mental golf styles. Tiger has the aggressive, fist-pumping outwardly competitive personality while Ernie is much more relaxed and certainly is less demonstrative with his emotions. Both players' games would suffer if they tried to play with each other's mental style.

2. Annika Sorenstam and Nancy Lopez are the dominant LPGA players of their generations. Both have very different golf temperaments. Nancy is outgoing and openly emotional while Annika is more reserved. She competes with a steady persistence that is virtually unshakable. Different golfing personalities produced two great champions.

3. Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite played together as junior golfers and college teammates but each had very different learning styles. Kite was analytical while Crenshaw learned more by feel and instinct. The legendary Harvey Penick coached both of them according to their preferred mental golf style rather than trying to make either conform to a "best" golf personality. This was sheer genius on Mr. Penick's part and contributed to both players becoming Hall of Famers.

4. Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson caddied together as youngsters but had very different golfing temperaments. Hogan was very driven, stoic, and task-oriented while Nelson was more outgoing and relaxed. Each used his own mental style to his best advantage to became two of the greatest players of all time.

5. Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros are European counterparts and great champions with very opposite mental styles. Faldo is quite analytical and precision-minded while Seve is at the other end of the spectrum: a creative, "see the shot and hit it" type of shot-maker. Neither would have been great trying to use the other's style.

What's your "best" mental golf style? What's your preferred style when preparing to take a shot, managing the course, or working with your golf instructor? Get your head in sync with your physical swing ......

This school was recently rated as the top golf school in America by Golf Magazine. This is what Pia & Lynn had to say about the profile:

“We’ve been familiar with the DISC profile system for years, but have never seen it applied at such a high level in golf terminology like it is with The Mental Golf profile. We have a strong relationship with Titleist and we’re pleased that we can offer our players the same profile The Titleist Performance Institute uses.”
